Cheese and Rights.

On April 10, during the huge immigration protests, the local cafe was closed. There was a note taped to the door informing hungry patrons that the cafe would not open due to anticipated staffing shortages. No big deal, I bought a pasta salad from the quickie mart. Thumbs up - I'm down with the protesters.

On April 11, the cafe reopened. Strangely, most of the staff were unfamiliar faces. I thought little of it. Over the following days, I noticed that the pre-protest employees never came back.

Yesterday, at the cafe, one of the new people was making my salad.
Lex: "Could you put cheese on that?"
New Guy: "I think that cost extra."
Lex: "Huh? They never charge me for cheese."
New Guy: "Oh." Puts cheese on my salad. "Next time, I think you need to tell the meng." Points to the Order Guy.
Lex: "Yeah, sure. What happened to the old salad-making girls?"
New Guy: "Don't know, they no work here no more."
Lex: "What!? Is it because of the protest?"
New Guy: "Don't know."
Lex: Loud enough for the owner to hear. "Cause that would be some serious bullshit to fire people for standing up for what they believe in."
New Guy: "Don't know. We don't have no fat-free Ranch. Want reglar?"
Lex: "Cheese and rice. Sure, yeah, whatever. I can't believe they fired everyone for the protest."
I don't know if that's what happened. I don't know that I care. What is really pissing me off is that I'm getting charged 50 cents for cheese on a $3.00 salad. And now it's just a little sprinkling of cheese, where I used to get heaps for free. This is bullshit. Fuck the man and his refusal to support immigrant rights. And my free cheese.

  • Thanks BF, I thought so.

To clarify for those who don't know me *in person* and haven't been able to ask me directly (as people inevitably do) ...

"Cheese and Rice" is a term I throw around frequently. To the point where, during my 2L summer job, my co-clerk informed me that I was known as "The Cheese and Rice Girl" among his friends.

The term is derived from a conversation I had with my childhood best friend, who hangs out with a lot of Jesus-Freaks. I used to say "Jesus Christ" all the time and she would scold me:

"It's 'cheese and rice,' 'cheese and rice' damnit. You're pissing people off bitch."

Ever since, I only invoke the name of Jesus Christ under shield and in the form of food.

You know, because I have mad respect.

  • "Mad respect?" Jesus Fucking Christ, what the hell does that mean!

Quit pussy footing around the war on Christians and just get with the program! Haven't you watched enough "Mind of Mencia" to get it, the politically correct movement is dead!

If you believe in the "One Human Family" concept, which I do, then, Lex, as you know, everybody in the family is fair game for put downs! Yes, the family is most likely dysfunctional, but, show me a family that isn't!

Finally, if the quicky mart had a decent salad, why are you still going to THAT place for a salad if they fired all the workers because of the protest!

And what will you do next week, if the immigrants protest for the whole week, as they are claiming that they will?

I getting better, and back to blogging!

  • And, one more thing about the place where you get your salad...

Are they hiring illegal workers? Is that a job that Americans wouldn't do? Do those that are working there now have social security numbers, and are the payroll taxes being paid by the establishment that prepares your salad?

Don't get mad at the protesters, get mad at the corporations that are hiring them and ripping off the American taxpayer by not paying the payroll tax! It is you and I who have to make up the difference while the owner of the salad bar pockets the profits, and harrasses the immigrants who won't/don't speak up for themselves. If you want to stand up for the protesters, stop buying your salad there!

    Cheese and Rice!

  • Cheese and rice, CECU, cheese and rice. How seriously we take Lex's irreverant comments...

First, the quickie mart sells PASTA salad, not regular kind. There is no substitute for a heap of romaine with cucumbers and tomatoes...

Second, what's this "whole week" protest about? My understanding was that it was one day, International Labor Day, and that the immigrant rights movement was split on whether to participate. So, I thought it was going to be a limited and weak showing... Am I missing some news?

Third, Mind of Mencia kicks ass. Did you see the SF special?

Fourth, I must make clear that I do not actually feel ill will towards undocumented workers. I just like free cheese. The reality is that I strongly believe in the 'One Family' concept. I have a very hard time feeling animosity towards someone who feels they need to put their safety and freedom in jeapordy to feed their families. The cheap yardwork doesn't work against them either.

Fifth, yeah, fuck corporations. I don't have specific reasons. Just, you know, fuck corporations. (My Berkeley Liberal Logic hard at work on this one.)

Fifth, why did no one pick up on the fact that I intentionally made it clear in the post that the new worker was also Hispanic? I was trying to subtly point out the divide and conquer techniques being used by employers of immigrant workers.

Finally - NO I don't really have mad respect for Christians. I just like saying "cheese and rice." I find it humorous because I have explained the meaning of the saying to lots of Christians, and they THANK me for being respectful. I'm always thinking to myself- how is this respectful? I mean the same thing, I'm still using your Saviour's name *in vain*, and now I've gone so far as to reduce him to food - and you're thanking me?

Christians really are as stupid as they think.

As Carlos would say - "Dee-dee-dee."

Get better CECU, and make CECA cater to your every whim until you do.

By Blogger Lex Fori, at 10:54 AM

  • I wish I could make CECA cater to my every whim, but, she is right up there with all of the other women in the hierachy, strong! Could you see any of your aunts "catering" to their man's whims...dee dee dee.

I like that you put two "fifth" in that post. Makes me think that it was subliminal and you had booze on the mind ... dee dee dee.

I think it should be more like...
"dum de da"! What do you think? I don't think dee dee dee actually catches that "sound"!

By Blogger Crazy East Coast Uncle, at 12:17 PM

  • Good point about the females in the Fori family not catering. I forget that even if they marry in, they still usually pick up the traits. Even adoption can't spare you the good luck of these genes. At least CECC will know what he's in for even though his dad had to fly blind until recent years....

"Fifth, fifth, finally." Maybe I'll start using that as our own personal "dee-dee-dee" to eachother. Direct result of me going back and inserting more and more shit into the comment.

    Dum De Da.

  • Dum Dee Duh, that about sums it up !

As for Mencia, yes, I did see the episode from SF Loved the part about the neighborhoods!

And totally enjoyed the episode about the rollercoaster ride with the guy in the wheel chair!

As for the protest starting next Monday, check out the news...it is all over the place! Get with it! Even in my fuzziness from the illness, I know about it. Two weeks ago, we had about 75,000 marching here in SW Florida!

By Blogger Crazy East Coast Uncle, at 3:21 PM

  • Well, yeah, I listen to the news. NPR mostly as of late because I only have free time while in my car. As a complete tangent - they taught me last week that if you put Mentos into a 2 liter of diet coke - it toally gysers out!!! Like, really high. We've been conducting experiments at home, it's super cool.

Anyhow, it was on NPR that I heard about the scattered protests and boycott

Anyhow, it was on NPR that I heard about the scattered protests and boycotts scheduled for Monday. But I also heard that it was expected to be a way smaller showing than was seen April 10th, because there is disagreement among the national groups as to whether a Monday walk-out (again) would be a prudent way to demonstrate a willingness and desire to work...

Where are you hearing about all week stuff? Link me yo'

    Fifth, fifth and finally.

  • The banker's site is gone! Woe is me!

  • Here is today's USAToday article...

    http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2006-04-27-big-stop_x.htm

I hope it works for you :)

By Blogger Crazy East Coast Uncle, at 5:10 AM

  • Yeah... I'm still reading that as being a one-day thing. Although I will concede that the article mentions some expect the turnout to be larger than on April 10th.

But I doubt it. I bet you a fancy dinner at Taco Bell that the protests aren't as large this time around.

By Blogger Lex Fori, at 9:15 AM

  • I'll take that bet...you are on! If I win, you can donate my winnings to a local protester!
